Self Management Programme 6th June 6:00pm – 8:30pm @ The Mind Hub
Jun 6 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

When and where

Our next available self management programme takes place on Thursday 18th of April 6:00pm – 8:30pm at our hub at Bushey Fields Hospital, weekly for six weeks until Thursday 23rd May.

What is the Self Management Programme?

Self management programmes (SMPs) are available for adults living within the Dudley area with a long-term physical or mental health condition including anxiety and/or depression, or for those in a caring role. SMPs aim to improve your quality of life by giving you confidence, skills and information to help manage your long-term condition or caring role better on a daily basis.

Please note that in order to be able to take part in a Self Management Programme you must live or work within the Dudley area and/or have a Dudley based GP.

The programmes are FREE and run for 2.5 hours, once a week for six weeks.

Each course takes place once a week, for 6 weeks and is tutored by trained volunteers who themselves are living with a long term health condition.

Watch the video below to see what two of our SMP tutors have to say about the programme and why they decided to become tutors after taking part in it themselves.

Topics include:

  • Getting a good nights sleep
  • Coping with difficult emotions/depression
  • Relaxation techniques and exercise
  • Healthy eating
  • Communicating with friends and family and health professionals
  • Dealing with pain and extreme tiredness

By taking part in a programme you will:

  • Learn new skills to manage your health condition
  • Develop confidence in the daily management of your specific condition
  • Meet others and share similar experiences
  • Learn how to develop more effective relationships with healthcare professionals

The video below is of a previous group of participants, who after taking part in the programme still meet up on a regular basis to help support each other.

If you are interested in taking part in one of Dudley Mind’s Self Management Programmes please contact Simon at Dudley Mind on 01384 442938 or by email simon.bennett@dudleymind.org.uk.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training programme that teaches delegates how to help a person developing a mental health problem (including a substance use problem), experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Like traditional first aid, Mental Health First Aid does not teach people to treat or diagnose mental health or substance use conditions. Instead, the training teaches people how to offer initial support until appropriate professional help is received or until the crisis resolves.

There are three different levels of MHFA course that we can deliver for your organisation. We can deliver a blend of courses to provide the most appropriate level of training for different groups of staff.

Workplace MHFA Two Day

The two day course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider. Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix
