Mental Health Liaison Employment Officer

  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm (may include the occasional weekend.

  • Contract: Fixed term from 7th June 2021 until 14th January 2022 (to be confirmed)

  • Salary: £25,000 pro rata (total salary for fixed term £14,583,33)

  • Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer.

  • Responsible for: No line manager responsibilities.

  • Liaise with: Line Manager, Communication support, MHELW from other local Mind Associations, representatives from Mind and the Mentor project, people with mental health problems, their employers and representatives from mental health services (statutory and non-statutory)

  • Based in: Head office in Dudley at Bushey fields Hospital - to work from head office.

  • annual leave: 25 days pro rata plus bank holidays (18 days actual)

  • Pension: Pension scheme available.

  • Travel: Must have full driving licence and access to a car for irregular travel for which reimbursement of out of pocket expenses is available.

Job Purpose

The MHELW will provide support to employees identified as having significant mental health problems (i.e., those who are currently receiving NHS primary and secondary mental healthcare support), to remain engaged and productive at work. The worker will act as a liaison between employees, employers and mental healthcare providers to provide tailored advice and support on what good workplace wellbeing practices look like for each individual and how stakeholders can help achieve this.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the MHELW will provide support online with some optional sessions to be provided face to due to ongoing home working and social distancing requirements during the epidemic and beyond. face (NB. Availability of face to face sessions will be dependent on Covid-19 restrictions, and Covid-19 secure workplaces.)

The MHELW will not provide formal (e.g. manualised) psychological therapy for employees.

  1. An ethos that recovery is likely and therefore work can be maintained.

  2. Zero exclusion – a person’s desire to be employed is the only criterion for access to employment support. Individual characteristics like work history, current mental health symptoms, addiction issues, and convictions do not affect access, but will be used to tailor the intensity of employment support.

  3. The support provided is based on employee preferences, within the set boundaries of the role.

  4. The MHELW is independent. The worker will provide support in the best interests of the employee. However, the worker will focus on the needs of both the employee and employer - this is based on the idea that it is in the interests of both the employer and employee that the individual be supported to continue to work and be productive.

  5. The support to the employee and employer will be individually tailored, but will in general terms involve:

    a. Stage 1 - preparatory meetings with both parties where process and desired outcomes are explored; education about mental health, work and productivity will be provided.

    b. Stage 2 - involving tailored support regarding advice and support around good workplace wellbeing practices, adaptations to be made and mental health literacy;

    c. Stage 3 – review, future planning and MHELW exit plan.
